Now commences our trip on the real train from Quito to Guayaquil. This day was going to Riobamba. The train had two cars with seats and tables, a bar/lounge car, and an obervation car with an outside platform on the rear. It was pulled by a diesel locomotive with a utility car behind the locomotive. The train was in very good shape.
We passed some pretty impressive mountain volcanos (it was the end of the rainy season, but quite clear). The observation car in addition to the open rear platform had windows that opened so it was easy to look out and take pictures of passing scenery. Many people, kids and adults, waved at us as the train went by - and we waved back. Generally we ate lunch at restaurants and other places, but they did serve a box lunch on this first day.
In the afternoon we stopped at a rairoad yard where there was a steam locomotive and they attched it to the train istead of the diesel engine for the rest of the afternoon trip/
