Our Trip to Ireland - Overview
May. 22nd, 2012 04:25 pmRobert and I spent almost 2 weeks in Western Ireland. This was a trip organized by Ken McFarland (our 6th one of his) and this one in addition to wonderful scenery in a remarkable place had 12 nights of English Country Dancing. We danced to the music of Bare Necessities (one of the best) and the calling by Gene Murrow. There were about 60 of us and all were charming people.

As soon as the plane (non-stop Boston to Shannon) got close to Ireland we saw how green everything was. The weather forecasts had spotty showers or occasional drizzle for most days but it was actually quite good. We never got wet - several days when there were showers they'd last for a minute or so. Most days had some sun.
This section of Ireland (I know nothing of others) is very rugged - lots of hills, many small fields with stone walls dividing them and lots of sheep. It is sparsely populated, most houses were one or two stories with skylights or small dormers in the roofs usually painted white. The coast had lots of cliffs. We ferried to several islands.
We stayed in nice hotels with Irish Breakfasts and good restaurants (most had ballrooms for the dancing). The soups were great. Brown bread, scones, and soda bread are a specialty everywhere. Oddly in spite of all the sheep we rarely were offered lamb.
