Once Were Warriors

Some time ago while preparing for our trip to New Zealand we watched Whale Rider to learn a bit about Maori culture. We then got to see some of it while there in Rotorua.

Tonight we watched Once Were Warriors (alerted to it by a comment from theoctothorpe when I wrote about Whale Rider). It was a very dark film, and I thought very well done.

rsc remarked that it is just as well that we didn't see this before we went. It certainly shows another side of NZ, and the difficulties of the mix of assimilation, unemployment, too much liquor, and male domination.

Maybe I'll go find the book, too.
