While perusing through the latest Gardener's Supply catalog I discovered this lovely device. It only costs $1,799 (but is no longer available according to their website). 
It can be programmed to mow automatically, but also comes with a remote control. It returns to its garage when it is done for recharging or if it detects rain. Perimeter wires prevent is from mowing your neighbor's lawn. I don't suppose it can be programmed to not mow wild flowers. If it tips over, it stops (I suppose a newer version will send you email if this happens).
