A visit to Port Arthur - Tasmania
Dec. 23rd, 2015 11:49 amPort Arthur was the prison for convicted British Criminals. It opened in 1853 and was abandoned as a prison in 1877. It was a harsh prison although it used innovative ideas for thimes to reward well-behaving prisoners. It had a youth section. It was viewed as being very hard to excape from like Alcatraz. There are mass graves there on the Isle of the Dead - mostly unmarked. We took a brief excursion to the Isle. Port Arthur is on a peninsula ~60km from Hobart and is now an interesting tourist attraction. Sadly in 1986 there was a killing spree by Martin Bryant who killed 35 people and wounded more.
