We watched The Legend of 1900 (DVD) the other day. It is directed by Giuseppe Tornatore who also directed Cinema Paradiso, another movie I really liked.

1900 was the name given to a baby born and abandoned on a ship in 1900. He lived on this ship for his entire life and becomes a great jazz and other forms pianist and composer. It is a pretty quirky movie about a quirky character with some fine acting and a neat story. It is told by Max, a trumpet player and ex colleague and good friend of 1900, starting from his visit to a pawn shop. There is a great duel with Jelly Roll Morton, a bit of a love story, some nice music and lots of shipboard scenes from shoveling coal to a very fancy ball room.
